Looking for a safer Lash Serum or Brow Serum? You’ve landed in the right spot - this DIY Lash and Brow Serum uses all natural ingredients and essential oils. And is so simple to make!
Y’all know how I feel about mascara - it’s my desert island product - but if I could pick two things to throw on before running out the door...it’d be lashes and brows. FOR SURE.
My natural brows are a little sparser than I’d like and it's no secret that my natural lashes are itty bitty. So I play both up with a tinted brow gel + volumizing mascara on the daily. But I like to give them a little extra TLC with a serum - the same way I would with my skin.
Here's what you need to make your own eyelash serum or eyebrow serum
The main ingredient in this is castor oil, a rich carrier oil that’s naturally high in vitamin E. Castor oil is known for its natural hair and skin support benefits - so I’ve paired it with two (optional) essential oils with a similar reputation.
If you’re adding essential oils - be sure to include Lavender, it’s a skin and hair support powerhouse! The luxe EO I add-in for extra hair support is Cedarwood. Both EO’s are stellar choices for hair and skin recipes. A little bit goes a long way, so I just use a drop of each. If you have very sensitive eyes, feel free to stick with just straight castor oil.
If you want an extra boost, you can add a few drops of pure vitamin E oil. I left it out of mine but feel free to make it your own.
WHEN’S THE BEST TIME TO APPLY A LASH AND BROW SERUM?
Since castor oil is a bit thicker, I like to apply it at night to give it lots of time to soak in. I wear brow gel and mascara during the day, and don’t find an oil-based serum wears well under makeup. So it works great to use before bed!
This p.m. preference holds especially true for lashes - I find it much more comfortable to have the oil-based serum on my lashes while my eyes are closed and I’m busy sleeping. I just apply to the ends of my lashes, taking care not to get it in my eyes.
WHERE CAN I GET QUALITY CARRIER OILS & THE MASCARA TUBE?
I got my castor oil and this empty tube with mascara wand from amazon! Check your local health food store’s beauty and personal care section. They very often carry castor oil.
Word to the wise - don’t reuse an old mascara bottle. Make sure if you’re going to use a container that it is 100% new and clean.
Make sure you’re getting a quality carrier oil to pair with your pure EOs – for castor oil look for organic, cold-pressed, hexane free, fragrance-free and unrefined. This way you know it wasn’t processed with chemicals or chemical solvents that may not be disclosed on the label.
Lastly, check the ingredients list to make sure it’s only castor oil vs. a blend of oils. I've been duped by so many labels that read "100% Pure" on the front, and it turns out to be a blend of MANY different oils all in one. Some may not be face-friendly - like coconut oil which is great for use on the body but can be pore-clogging when used on the face.

Hi, I tried making my own lash serum but found the oil got cloudy within 4 weeks of using it. I’m not sure what I have done wrong or why this happens. What would you recommend?
Lauren Kenson says
Hi Dani, I've had something similar happen once before (when the brush picked up some residual eye makeup on my lashes and brows that I hadn't fully washed off before applying). So I'd definitely recommend using a thorough eye makeup remover like an oil cleanser to make sure there's no makeup or sunscreen etc that the brush might be picking up. And additionally you could try wiping the brush off on a clean towel before putting back into the bottle. If that doesn't work, then switching to a dropper bottle with no brush could be an easy resolution - simply use the same recipe and drop out what you need on a clean finger & apply to lashes & brows that way. Hope that helps!

Could I mix a bit of rose oil in to get the vitamin E benefit or should I just do straight Castor oil? Thanks in advance!
Lauren Kenson says
Hi Lorinda,
I'm not sure if you mean rose essential oil or rosehip oil - I haven't tried either of those ingredients with this recipe, I typically just use castor oil.
Rosehip oil is also a very nourishing carrier oil and from what I've read, should be fine to use around the eye area. For pure rose essential oil, just like using any topical essential oils, I would dilute accordingly. Since rose essential oil is such a luxury ($$$) ingredient, I tend to save mine for adding to all-over face serums & products instead! Love it for that use.
Hope that's helpful!
